Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday praised the Uttar Pradesh government for its handling of the Covid crisis and said the way it had controlled the second wave of the infection was "unprecedented".

The prime minister, who arrived at his parliamentary constituency, Varanasi in the morning, also appreciated the Yogi Adiyanath-led government for working with a development oriented approach rather than one based on corruption and nepotism, and bringing in rule of law in the state.

Describing the efforts of the government in combating COVID-19 as "commendable", the prime minister said Uttar Pradesh's population is more than a dozen big countries but the way it has controlled the second wave of corona and stopped its spread is unprecedented".
Netizens were quick to react on PM's comment over the havoc the second wave of COVID-19 created particularly in Uttar Pradesh. Twitterati recalled the horrors witnessed during that time which was just two months ago. Photographers were reportedly forbidden from taking photos of crematoriums. there were reports that hospitals were forbidden from flagging oxygen shortage. Walls were raised srrounding some crematoriums so that passers by could not photograph them. The ghats of Ganga were full of half buried dead bodies. All these were reported widely by the foreign press but only a handful of Indian media houses could muster courage to highlight the plight and trauma citizens in UP went through at that time.
