Yemen's Houthis release video of hijacking India-bound ship, threatening crew Featured

  21 November 2023

The Houthis in Yemen have released a video showing how the group hijacked a cargo ship in the Red Sea that was heading towards India. The footage shows a helicopter swiftly approaching the ship, Galaxy Leader, from the top and landing on the vessel.

Several Houthi gunmen are seen getting off from the chopper and taking their positions on the ship. Some of them are seen bolting towards the ship's cabin.

The gunmen open the cabin door and several crewmen are seen putting their hands up in the air.

One of the Houthi gunmen is also seen shouting the group's slogan while walking through the vessel. He says, "God is the Greatest, Death to America, Death to Israel, Cursed be the Jews, Victory to Islam," according to The Times of Israel.

According to Israel, the cargo ship is owned by a British company and is operated by a Japanese firm. There were 25 crew members of various nationalities, including Ukrainian, Bulgarian, Filipino and Mexican onboard the vessel.

There were no Israelis present on the ship and the vessel was on its way from Turkey to India when it was hijacked, The Times of Israel reported. Israel termed the hijacking of the ship by Houthi rebels an "Iranian act of terrorism" and "a very grave incident on a global level".

Houthis, who are backed by Iran, have sided with Hamas in their war against Israel and fired several rounds of missiles towards the Jewish nation. According to the Houthis, they have been launching attacks against Israel "in solidarity with the Palestinians".
