Senior England batter Joe Root had indicated his decision to pull out of the 2024 season after having remained on the bench throughout the 2023 season, and he was among the nine players released by the Royals on Sunday. Also getting released from the franchise is senior West Indian all-rounder Jason Holder, who had little impact with bat or ball for the Royals last season, collecting 12 runs in eight appearances across the season along with four wickets. The Barbadian had three good seasons with the ball between 2020 and 2022 for Sunrisers Hyderabad and Lucknow Super Giants, but simply could not deliver for the Royals this time around.

Pacer Obed McCoy, who played just one game in the entire 2023 season, too follows fellow West Indian Holder in the auction pool. The other players released by the Royals are Murugan Ashwin. KC Cariappa, KM Asif, Akash Vashisht, Abdul Basith and Kuldip Yadav (the pacer).

RR have also been part of the trading window, sending batter Devdutt Padikkal to Lucknow Super Giants in exchange of pacer Avesh Khan. Avesh’s inclusion shores up the Indian pace-bowling department that comprises Krishna, Navdeep Saini and Kuldeep Sen and he might just be given a long rope this season as one of RR’s first-choice seam options.
