Congress hits streets over farm laws, Priyanka Gandhi detained Featured

  24 December 2020

Led by former Congress president Rahul Gandhi and Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi, hundreds of Congress workers hit the streets on Thursday, protesting newly enacted farm laws.

Priyanka Gandhi along with several senior Congress leaders was detained by the Delhi police after she stated marching towards Rashtrapati Bhawan. The Congress leaders wanted to meet Rashtrapati Ram Nath Kovind and hand him over 2 crores signatures of farmers, demanding annulment of farm laws.

Later, Priyanka was taken to Mandir Marg police station.

Talking to reporters Priyanka said that any government cannot be run by blaming Opposition for everything.

“We are living in democracy and they are elected MPs. They have the right to meet the President and they should be allowed. What is the problem with that? This government is not ready to listen to voices of lakhs of farmers camping at borders,” said priyanka after being stopped by police while marching to the Rashtrapati Bhawan.

Priyanka added, “Sometimes they say we are so weak that we don't qualify as Opposition and sometimes, they say that we are so powerful that we have made lakhs of farmers camp at the border (of Delhi) for a month.”

“It is a sin to use the kind of names they (BJP leaders & supporters) used for farmers. If Govt is calling them anti-nationals, then the govt is a sinner,” said said the Congress leader.

Asserting that the Congress’ activists are marching towards Rashtrapati Bhawan to voice her party’s support for the farmers, Priyanka said, “Any dissent against this govt is classified as having elements of terror.”

Farmers have been protesting at the Delhi borders against the contentious farm laws for almost a month now. The government has held many round of talks with the farmer unions but failed to reach a consensus.
