Congress may get a new president by August 10 Featured

  16 July 2020

New Delhi. Sonia Gandhi was elected the interim president of the party by the Congress Working Committee after the resignation of the then president Rahul Gandhi after the Lok Sabha elections last year.

Now Sonia Gandhi's term is going to complete one year and before that the party has to complete the process of election of the new president. As per rules, before the completion of Sonia Gandhi's term, the party will have to call a meeting of the Congress Working Committee and elect the new president and inform the Election Commission. If it does not, the Election Commission can intervene in it.

The Election Commission has sent a notice to the Congress seeking information on the election of the National President. It is believed that a meeting of the Congress Working Committee can be called in the first week of August.

Significantly, after the poor performance of the Congress in the Lok Sabha elections, the then Congress President Rahul Gandhi resigned from the post of Party President. Congress leaders tried to persuade Rahul Gandhi to continue in office, but all efforts to convince Rahul were in vain.

Regarding his resignation, Rahul Gandhi kept saying that he was firm on his resignation and eventually he did not withdraw his resignation. It is now to see who is elected to the responsibility of the post of party president in the Congress Working Committee meeting before August 10.

These speculations are also being made because Sonia Gandhi cannot handle the responsibility of working as the party president for a long time due to health reasons. The by-elections are to be held for 24 seats in Bihar Assembly and Madhya Pradesh this year. In such a situation, the party cannot postpone the process of choosing a new president.
