Over 11K join in Cong in Single Day from ASSAM, party makes 10th of every month designated joining day Featured

  11 November 2025

Guwahati: On a single day on Monday, over 11,000 leaders and members from various political parties and organisations, including the BJP, joined the Congress in Assam.

The joining event was part of Assam PCC’s initiative to designate the 10th day of every month for welcoming defectors and new members ahead of the 2026 assembly election. This marked the third consecutive month since Sept when Assam Congress welcomed new members on the 10th.

Former Tinsukia district BJP president Lakheshwar Moran expressed dissatisfaction with BJP’s policies and admiration for Congress’s ideology by joining the Congress. In the Philobari area alone, nearly 1,000 individuals from various organisations took Congress membership. At the Philobari event in Tinsukia, Gogoi addressed the gathering, highlighting issues like “illegal tax collection” and the public being burdened by coal, sand and beetle nut syndicates. He lamented the state of Assam’s tea industry, recalling singer Zubeen Garg’s words about Assam's treasures — tea, rhinos, oil, and Zubeen Garg himself — and alleged that these treasures are now under threat.

In Guwahati, over 100 people joined Congress. The event was attended by leader of the opposition Debabrata Saikia, former presidents Ripun Bora and Bhupen Bora, former MP Abdul Khaleque, and Assam Pradesh Mahila Congress president Mira Barthakur. Among the new members were lawyers from the Gauhati High Court, senior citizens, and former BJP officeholders.

Similar events took place in Jorhat, Sivasagar, Charaideo, Dibrugarh, Dhemaji, Lakhimpur, Sonitpur, and Kamrup districts.
