Saudi Arabia's sports minister, Prince Abdulaziz bin Turki Al Faisal, celebrates as Fifa confirms Saudi Arabia as the 2034 World Cup host
  • 15 stadiums across five cities
  • First tournament with 48 teams
  • Likely to be held in winter

Fifa, the world football governing body, has officially named Saudi Arabia as the host nation for the 2034 World Cup.

The kingdom submitted its bid to host the event in July under the slogan “Growing. Together” after Fifa invited bids from countries in Asia and Oceania last year. The only country in contention, Australia, did not apply on the final day of the bids.

The Gulf state has promised to deliver “a tournament of a lifetime” after being selected as World Cup 2034, the state-run Saudi Press Agency (SPA) reported.

“The kingdom is on a remarkable journey of transformation under Vision 2030 and today is another huge step forward that reflects and celebrates our progress while looking ahead to an even brighter future,” said Prince Abdulaziz bin Turki bin Faisal, minister of sport.

Crown Prince and Prime Minister Mohammed bin Salman set up a higher commission for hosting the World Cup, as the kingdom will be the first country to host the event with 48 teams from all continents.

Saudi Arabia has proposed 15 stadiums across five host cities, Riyadh, Jeddah, Neom, Abha and Al Khobar, of which eight will be built completely from scratch

The centerpiece will be the King Salman International Stadium in Riyadh, which will host the opening and final match.

Three of the 15 stadiums are already under construction in preparation for hosting the AFC Asian Cup in 2027. Ten Fifa fan festival sites are proposed, including one at King Salman Park in Riyadh and another planned along the Jeddah Waterfront.

In 2023, Saudi Arabia explored the possibility of a joint bid with Egypt and Greece for the 2030 World Cup, but shifted its focus to a lone bid for 2034 after securing the support of European countries and dozens of other nations.

Qatar, the first Arab country to host the tournament in 2022, used air-conditioned stadiums but still had to request to stage it in the winter. Saudi Arabia has praised Qatar’s hosting of the 2022 event.

Qatar’s bid also came without a price tag but its hosting of the event is thought to have cost $220 billion because of the infrastructure built especially for the event, said Simon Chadwick, sports professor at the Skema Business School in France. The stadiums themselves cost about $10 billion.

“One suspects that this will be a ‘money’s no object’ tournament, as the country seeks both to create infrastructure that will sustain its positioning as a major event host and to outwardly project an image of modernity and trustworthiness,” Chadwick said.

He added that it was almost certain Fifa would agree to another winter World Cup.

In Saudi Arabia’s case the tourism and infrastructure projects are already in motion as part of its Vision 2030 development programme.

James Dorsey, author of a book on Middle East sport, said there was a question mark over whether The Line stadium would be finished on time. It emerged in March that original plans for The Line to open in 2030 at 170km in length have been scaled back to around 2.4km.

“To be fair, reducing the number of stadia stipulated in a bid document is not uncommon. Qatar was not the first host to do so,” Dorsey said.

“As a matter of principle, 11 stadiums in 10 years is ambitious but not impossible. The issue is more with futuristic projects like The Line,” he added.

Faisal Durrani of real estate consultancy Knight Frank said hosting the tournament, after almost two decades of construction projects valued at $1.25 trillion, would be a huge boon for Saudi Arabia’s international standing.

“It will showcase the country in a way never seen before,” he said.

Saudi Arabia already has more than 900 sports sponsorship deals in place, according to a recent report by Play the Game, a publicly funded sports ethics institute in Denmark. Of these, 194 are football-related.

While experts said the investments are part of the kingdom’s strategy to diversify away from oil, their long-term success will not be known for some time to come.

Stanis Elsborg, head of Play the Game and co-author of the report, said the sponsorships are “part of a much larger strategy to reshape how the world sees Saudi Arabia”.

“They’re using these big, high-profile events to project an image of success, prestige and modernity,” he said.

“At the end of the day, these investments are about influence and image-building.

“They’re leveraging sport as a powerful platform to tell a story – a narrative carefully designed to reshape their global reputation and cement their place in geopolitics.”

Under Vision 2030, Saudi Arabia is also developing sports to drive economic growth and improve quality of life, and the hosting of the World Cup will help to achieve this goal.

Football has been at the heart of this transformation. The country now has more than 300,000 boys and girls participating in school leagues, supported by 23 regional youth training centres and 19 national teams.

BCCI accepts PCB's demand as ICC reach consensus to stage Champions Trophy 2025 in hybrid model https://indiamirror.net/index.php/en/terms-and-conditions/item/4029-bcci-accepts-pcb-s-demand-as-icc-reach-consensus-to-stage-champions-trophy-2025-in-hybrid-model https://indiamirror.net/index.php/en/terms-and-conditions/item/4029-bcci-accepts-pcb-s-demand-as-icc-reach-consensus-to-stage-champions-trophy-2025-in-hybrid-model

The International Cricket Council (ICC) reached a consensus on Thursday to stage the 2025 Champions Trophy in a hybrid model, wherein India will play all its matches in Dubai.

Meanwhile, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) also accepted the Pakistan Cricket Board's (PCB) demand to follow the hybrid model for all ICC tournaments held in India until 2027.

According to a report by the news agency PTI, the decision was finalised after ICC's newest chairman, Jay Shah, met the board members, including Pakistan, in an informal meeting at the headquarters in Dubai on Thursday.

"It's been agreed in principle by all parties that the 2025 Champions Trophy will be held in the UAE and Pakistan, with India playing its matches in Dubai. It's a win-win situation for all stakeholders," the ICC source told PTI.

Last week, after months of back-and-forth and withdrawing its boycott threat, PCB, reportedly threatened to lose their hosting rights, finally agreed to BCCI and ICC's demand to adapt the hybrid model for the Champions Trophy. "Cricket should win, that's most important, but with respect for all. We are going to do what's best for cricket. Whichever formula we go for, it would be on equal terms," Pakistan Cricket Board head Mohsin Naqvi had stated after the last ICC meet.

In return, PCB demanded that a similar rule be followed during all ICC tournaments played in India until 2031. However, the ICC has agreed to a hybrid model for all its events until 2027.

During this period, India will host two ICC tournaments. They will co-host the T20 World Cup with Sri Lanka in 2026, implying that Pakistan will play all their matches in the island nation. They will also host the Women's World Cup in 2025, hence Pakistan's cricket team will have to travel to a neutral country for all their matches.

"During the 2026 men's T20 World Cup, Pakistan will play its matches in Sri Lanka. The compensation demanded by PCB for the Champions Trophy hybrid model is still under consideration," the source said.

Champions Trophy schedule to be announced soon?

The chaos surrounding the hybrid model for the ICC tournament caused a considerable delay in announcing the schedule for the Champions Trophy. In fact, as per the contract between ICC and the broadcasters, the schedule should have been announced at least 90 days in advance but that deadline has already been breached. However, with the decks being cleared, the release of the Champions Trophy schedule could be expected soon by fans and broadcasters, Star Sports.

The channel's representatives were in Dubai to discuss the operational modalities of the 'Hybrid Model' and prospective schedule with Shah. But that meeting was postponed to Saturday, according to sources.

IPL Auction 2025: Full squads analysed - how each team strategised to build the perfect combination https://indiamirror.net/index.php/en/terms-and-conditions/item/4023-ipl-auction-2025-full-squads-analysed-how-each-team-strategised-to-build-the-perfect-combination https://indiamirror.net/index.php/en/terms-and-conditions/item/4023-ipl-auction-2025-full-squads-analysed-how-each-team-strategised-to-build-the-perfect-combination

All Indian Premier League (IPL) teams have finalised their squads for the 2025 season after going through the retentions and the auction. Each team has signed their minimum 18 players and maximum of 25 from the Rs 120 crore that was available to them.

We take a look at how the teams are stacked after the two-day auction process in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

Mumbai Indians

Mumbai Indians (MI) have a robust core of Indian players, but their overseas signings for the upcoming season are unconventional. While the presence of Trent Boult and Mitchell Santner adds experience, the rest of their foreign contingent is relatively untested in the IPL.

Players like England’s Will Jacks, Reece Topley, South Africa’s Lizaad Williams, and Afghanistan’s Allah Ghazanfar have limited league experience. New Zealand's Bevan-John Jacobs and South Africa’s Ryan Rickelton are making their IPL debuts, making MI’s depth a key area to watch.

Mumbai Indians SQUAD

Batters: Suryakumar Yadav (retained), Rohit Sharma (retained), Tilak Varma (retained), Bevan-John Jacobs

Wicketkeepers: Robin Minz, Ryan Rickelton, Krishnan Shrijith

Allrounders: Hardik Pandya (pace; retained), Naman Dhir (spin; RTM), Will Jacks (spin), Raj Angad Bawa (pace), Vignesh Puthur (spin)

Fast bowlers: Jasprit Bumrah (retained), Deepak Chahar, Trent Boult, Ashwani Kumar, Reece Topley, Satyanarayana Raju, Arjun Tendulkar, Lizaad Williams

Chennai Super Kings

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) made headlines by re-signing R. Ashwin after a decade, reuniting him with Ravindra Jadeja to further strengthen their spin department. The addition of young Afghan spinner Noor Ahmad complements their strategy. Their squad now boasts several all-rounders and fast bowlers. CSK has also placed bets on players like Rahul Tripathi, Vijay Shankar, and Kamlesh Nagarkoti, hoping to revive their IPL careers.

Chennai Super Kings SQUAD

Batters: Ruturaj Gaikwad (retained), Rahul Tripathi, Shaik Rasheed, Deepak Hooda, Andre Siddarth

Fast bowlers: Matheesha Pathirana (retained), Khaleel Ahmed, Kamlesh Nagarkoti, Mukesh Choudhary, Gurjapneet Singh, Nathan Ellis

Royal Challengers Bengaluru

Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) bolstered their top order by acquiring Phil Salt, who will likely partner with Virat Kohli. They addressed their bowling woes with big investments in Josh Hazlewood and Bhuvneshwar Kumar. For once, RCB’s batting and bowling units seem balanced, reducing their historical over-reliance on a few star players.

Royal Challengers Bengaluru SQUAD

Batters: Virat Kohli (retained), Rajat Patidar (retained), Tim David, Manoj Bhandage, Devdutt Padikkal, Swastik Chikara

Wicketkeepers: Phil Salt, Jitesh Sharma

Allrounders: Liam Livingstone (spin), Krunal Pandya (spin), Swapnil Singh (spin), Romario Shepherd (pace), Jacob Bethell (spin), Mohit Rathee (spin)

Spinners: Suyash Sharma, Abhinandan Singh

Fast bowlers: Josh Hazlewood, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Yash Dayal (retained), Rasikh Salam, Nuwan Thushara, Lungi Ngidi

Sunrisers Hyderabad

Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) feature a formidable top five and a well-rounded first-choice bowling attack. However, their middle order remains relatively inexperienced. Back-up players Kamindu Mendis, Brydon Carse, and Eshan Malinga are new to the league, leaving SRH’s depth untested.

Sunrisers Hyderabad SQUAD

Batters: Travis Head (retained), Abhinav Manohar, Aniket Verma, Sachin Baby

Wicketkeepers: Heinrich Klaasen (retained), Ishan Kishan, Atharva Taide

Allrounders: Abhishek Sharma (spin; retained), Nitish Kumar Reddy (pace; retained), Kamindu Mendis (spin)

Spinners: Adam Zampa, Rahul Chahar, Zeeshan Ansari

Fast bowlers: Mohammed Shami, Pat Cummins (retained), Harshal Patel, Simarjeet Singh, Jaydev Unadkat, Brydon Carse, Eshan Malinga

Kolkata Knight Riders

Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) retained six players from their 2024 title-winning squad and reacquired six others, including splurging ₹23.75 crore on Venkatesh Iyer, their potential new captain. They swapped out Phil Salt and Mitchell Starc for Quinton de Kock and Anrich Nortje/Spencer Johnson, raising questions about whether this is a true upgrade. Surprising bids for Manish Pandey and Ajinkya Rahane also suggest a shift in strategy for KKR, who traditionally favor aggressive batting styles.

Kolkata Knight Riders SQUAD

Batters: Rinku Singh (retained), Rovman Powell, Angkrish Raghuvanshi, Manish Pandey, Luvnith Sisodia, Ajinkya Rahane

Wicketkeepers: Quinton de Kock, Rahmanullah Gurbaz

Allrounders: Venkatesh Iyer (pace), Andre Russell (pace; retained), Sunil Narine (spin; retained), Ramandeep Singh (pace; retained), Anukul Roy (spin), Moeen Ali (spin)

Spinners: Varun Chakravarthy (retained), Mayank Markande

Fast bowlers: Harshit Rana (retained), Vaibhav Arora, Anrich Nortje, Spencer Johnson, Umran Malik

Punjab Kings

Punjab Kings (PBKS) made Shreyas Iyer their marquee signing for ₹26.75 crore, positioning him as a likely captain. The influence of head coach Ricky Ponting is clear, with five of their eight overseas players hailing from Australia. Their lineup will see significant changes, with Prabhsimran Singh, Shashank Singh, and Harpreet Brar likely being the only key holdovers from last season.

Punjab Kings SQUAD

Batters: Shreyas Iyer, Shashank Singh (retained), Nehal Wadhera, Harnoor Singh Pannu, Priyansh Arya, Pyla Avinash

Wicketkeepers: Josh Inglis, Vishnu Vinod, Prabhsimran Singh (retained)

Allrounders: Glenn Maxwell (spin), Marcus Stoinis (pace), Marco Jansen (pace), Harpreet Brar (spin), Azmatullah Omarzai (pace), Aaron Hardie (pace), Musheer Khan (spin), Suryansh Shedge (pace)

Spinners: Yuzvendra Chahal, Pravin Dubey

Fast bowlers: Arshdeep Singh (RTM), Lockie Ferguson, Yash Thakur, Vijaykumar Vyshak, Kuldeep Sen, Xavier Bartlett

Lucknow Super Giants

Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) broke records by acquiring Rishabh Pant for ₹27 crore, making him the most expensive player in IPL history and their likely captain. Despite an impressive top six, they missed out on an established Indian opener. However, they compensated with a strong Indian bowling lineup, which could lead to a batting order stacked with overseas talent.

Lucknow Super Giants SQUAD

Batters: Aiden Markram, David Miller, Ayush Badoni (retained), Himmat Singh, Matthew Breetzke

Wicketkeepers: Rishabh Pant, Nicholas Pooran (retained), Aryan Juyal

Allrounders: Adbul Samad (spin), Mitchell Marsh (pace), Shahbaz Ahmed (spin), Yuvraj Chaudhary (spin), Rajvardhan Hangargekar (pace), Arshin Kulkarni (Pace)

Spinners: Ravi Bishnoi (retained), M Siddharth, Digvesh Singh

Fast bowlers: Mayank Yadav (retained), Mohsin Khan (retained), Akash Deep, Avesh Khan, Akash Singh, Shamar Joseph, Prince Yadav

Delhi Capitals

Delhi Capitals (DC) face a captaincy dilemma between Axar Patel and new signing KL Rahul, who will likely open the batting. With aggressive hitters throughout the lineup, DC’s batting looks formidable. They have also addressed concerns in their fast bowling department, making it a much stronger unit this season.

Delhi Capitals SQUAD

Batters: Jake Fraser-McGurk (RTM), Harry Brook, Tristan Stubbs (retained), Faf du Plessis, Karun Nair

Wicketkeepers: KL Rahul, Abishek Porel (retained), Donovan Ferreria

Allrounders: Axar Patel (spin; retained), Ashutosh Sharma (spin), Sameer Rizvi (spin), Darshan Nalkande (pace), Vipraj Nigam (spin), Ajay Mandal (spin), Manvanth Kumar (pace), Tripurana Vijay (spin), Madhav Tiwari (pace)

Spinners: Kuldeep Yadav (retained)

Fast bowlers: Mitchell Starc, Mukesh Kumar, T Natarajan, Mohit Sharma, Dushmantha Chameera

Rajasthan Royals

Rajasthan Royals (RR) focused on boosting their bowling attack, bringing in Jofra Archer, Wanindu Hasaranga, and Maheesh Theekshana. However, Archer and Hasaranga’s injury history could test RR’s reliance on its Indian bench. Overseas reserves Kwena Maphaka and Fazalhaq Farooqi are relatively low-profile, raising questions about their depth.

Punjab Kings SQUAD

Batters: Yashasvi Jaiswal (retained), Shimron Hetmyer (retained), Shubham Dubey, Vaibhav Suryavanshi

Wicketkeepers: Sanju Samson (retained), Dhruv Jurel (retained), Kunal Singh Rathore

Allrounders: Riyan Parag (spin; retained), Nitish Rana (spin), Yudhvir Singh (pace)

Spinners: Wanindu Hasaranga, Maheesh Theekshana, Kumar Kartikeya

Fast bowlers: Jofra Archer, Sandeep Sharma (retained), Tushar Deshpande, Akash Madhwal, Fazalhaq Farooqi, Kwena Maphaka, Ashok Sharma

Gujarat Titans

Gujarat Titans (GT) made significant acquisitions, picking up marquee players like Jos Buttler, Mohammed Siraj, and Kagiso Rabada. Adding Prasidh Krishna was another strategic move. However, they remain vulnerable in their Indian fast-bowling backup and will rely heavily on Washington Sundar to overcome his recent IPL struggles and deliver a balanced performance.

Gujarat Titans SQUAD

Batters: Shubman Gill (retained), Sai Sudharsan (retained), Rahul Tewatia (retained), Sherfane Rutherford

Wicketkeepers: Jos Buttler, Kumar Kushagra, Anuj Rawat

PBKS IPL 2025 Full Player List: Punjab Kings Squad with Complete Details of Players Bought, Retained, and Released https://indiamirror.net/index.php/en/terms-and-conditions/item/4019-pbks-ipl-2025-full-player-list-punjab-kings-squad-with-complete-details-of-players-bought-retained-and-released https://indiamirror.net/index.php/en/terms-and-conditions/item/4019-pbks-ipl-2025-full-player-list-punjab-kings-squad-with-complete-details-of-players-bought-retained-and-released

NEW DELHI: Under the new guidance of Ricky Ponting, Punjab Kings (PBKS) are set to embark on a promising campaign in the IPL 2025, equipped with the largest budget of INR 110.5 crore among all franchises.

This financial advantage was strategically utilized to craft a balanced team, aiming to secure their first-ever IPL championship. A significant move in their team assembly was the acquisition of Shreyas Iyer, a renowned Indian batsman, for an unprecedented sum of Rs 26.75 crore, setting a new record for the highest purchase in IPL history.

Iyer, who previously led Kolkata Knight Riders to their third IPL victory in 2024, is expected to enhance PBKS's batting strength significantly.

In addition to Iyer, PBKS has also fortified its bowling lineup by signing Arshdeep Singh and Yuzvendra Chahal, both for Rs 18 crore. These players are among India's top wicket-takers in T20Is, promising to add depth and versatility to the team's bowling department, potentially making it one of the most competitive in the league.

Prior to the auction, PBKS retained two of its key players, Shashank Singh and Prabhsimran Singh, for INR 5.5 crore and INR 4 crore, respectively.

Shashank Singh has been recognized for his impactful performances as a middle-order batsman and a part-time bowler, while Prabhsimran Singh has been valued for his explosive batting at the top order and his skills as a wicketkeeper.

Since its inception in 2008, PBKS, formerly known as Kings XI Punjab, have experienced a mix of highs and lows, with their best performance being a runner-up finish in 2014.

However, inconsistency and frequent changes in leadership have been major obstacles in their quest for the title. The appointment of Ricky Ponting as head coach signifies a strategic shift towards stability, tactical acumen, and long-term planning in pursuit of success.

With a substantial budget and a strategic approach to the auction, PBKS focused on addressing key areas such as securing a consistent top-order batsman, experienced finishers, and specialist bowlers for the death overs.

This approach underlines their ambition to build a well-rounded and competitive squad for IPL 2025, aiming to overcome past inconsistencies and achieve their long-awaited championship victory.

Welcome to the Indian Test team: Fans overjoyed as Sarfaraz Khan earns maiden call-up in England series https://indiamirror.net/index.php/en/terms-and-conditions/item/3882-welcome-to-the-indian-test-team-fans-overjoyed-as-sarfaraz-khan-earns-maiden-call-up-in-england-series https://indiamirror.net/index.php/en/terms-and-conditions/item/3882-welcome-to-the-indian-test-team-fans-overjoyed-as-sarfaraz-khan-earns-maiden-call-up-in-england-series

India suffered a massive blow to their series against England after KL Rahul and Ravindra Jadeja were ruled out from the second Test match. Jadeja had suffered a hamstring injury on Day 4 of the opening Test match in Hyderabad, while KL Rahul complained of pain on his right quadriceps.

India named three replacements to the existing India squad for the second Test match. The Indian side handed maiden call-up for Sarfaraz Khan, who has been toiling in the Ranji Trophy for several years. In fact there was a furore over not giving Sarfaraz a call-up despite him doing sensationally well in the last three years.

India also brought in Bihar spinner Sourabh Kumar and dependable all-rounder Washington Sundar.

In India A's recent tour match against England Lions, Sarfaraz hit a stunning 161 in the only innings that India A batted in. Sarfaraz earned the player of the match award and helped India A win the tour game by an innings and 16 runs. There has been much debate about the batter's exclusion from the Test team and the relevance of Ranji Trophy in India's squad selection. The selection of the batter and spinner Sourabh Kumar in the 2nd Test match by reduce that noise for the moment.

England should refuse to play in first Test after India’s shameless Shoaib Bashir stunt https://indiamirror.net/index.php/en/terms-and-conditions/item/3873-england-should-refuse-to-play-in-first-test-after-india-s-shameless-shoaib-bashir-stunt https://indiamirror.net/index.php/en/terms-and-conditions/item/3873-england-should-refuse-to-play-in-first-test-after-india-s-shameless-shoaib-bashir-stunt

Forget the notion that Shoaib Bashir’s visa hold-up is the upshot of some unfortunate clerical oversight. His paperwork has been in the hands of Indian bureaucrats for over six weeks.

The only plausible explanation is that Narendra Modi’s fiercely pro-Hindu regime is making an example of a British Muslim of Pakistani ancestry, one variable over which he has no control. And so, on the eve of the proudest moment of his young career, the rookie off-spinner is stranded in diplomatic limbo. It is a shameful humiliation of a blameless player, and one that his England team-mates should punish in Hyderabad by refusing to take to the field.

The significance of this moment can hardly be understated. India has effectively concocted a method of determining which players can and cannot play for England based on their race. This is indefensible, and it demands to be met with the strongest response. Short of Ben Stokes marching into the visa department on Bashir’s behalf, the one powerful recourse he has left is to delay the series, to demonstrate that England will not be subservient to the world’s most powerful cricketing nation. The demeaning of one of their players for reasons not of his making should be treated as an affront to them all.

Imagine, for a moment, if the roles were reversed. Picture the almighty ruckus that the Board of Control for Cricket in India would create if one of their own were still waiting for approval to enter England after 44 days. They are so used to having their every whim indulged that in 2021, India had a decisive fifth Test against England at Edgbaston postponed, ostensibly on the pretext of a positive Covid-19 case. The explanation did not persuade Nasser Hussain, who argued the decision was all about enabling players to return for the Indian Premier League season.

It is a reflection of India’s insuperable might in the game that England are, in public at least, remaining so calm. “Things take time,” says Brendon McCullum, normally the straightest of shooters. Yes, but the process of issuing an Indian visa does not, for any England player without Pakistani heritage, take 1½ months. This is one impasse that could all be resolved within seconds. All it would take is one phone call from Jay Shah, the BCCI secretary, to his father, Amit, India’s minister for home affairs. In these situations, interior ministers are invested with the power of God to decree who passes through their nations’ borders. The fact that India wants to humiliate Bashir regardless illustrates how this case is about far more than the wheels of government grinding slowly.

This is about the 20-year-old being, in the eyes of England’s hosts, the wrong ethnicity. We know this because the pattern of behaviour is so well established. For last year’s World Cup, Pakistan were forced to cancel a two-day training camp when India only granted their visas 48 hours before the tournament. Usman Khawaja, a dual citizen of Australia and Pakistan, also faced a fearsome struggle to be admitted last March, with even Ramachandra Guha, a former BCCI administrator, calling his country’s treatment of the opening batsman “spiteful”.

The same label can be attached to India’s belittling of Bashir. What possible national security grounds are there for refusing him entry? He was born in Surrey, with his only connection to Pakistan through his parents. The Somerset bowler described himself as “lost for words” at the honour of his call-up to the England Test squad, and he has worked assiduously to prove his credentials with the side in Abu Dhabi. Now, while everyone else makes the short hop across the Arabian Sea, he is suffering the indignity of having to fly home. That it is all the product of muscle-flexing by India makes the experience doubly galling.

What should be Bashir’s finest hour is now his grisliest ordeal. A place in the first Test is out of the question, and a return for the second, starting on February 2, is increasingly in jeopardy if India’s intransigence continues. And what if the visa does not come through at all? This would carry the ugliest echo of the D’Oliveira Affair, when the statement by then South African prime minister John Vorster that Basil D’Oliveira – as a so-called “Cape Coloured” – would not be accepted as a member of the touring English side exposed the full repugnance of apartheid. On that occasion, England held their nerve, cancelling the 1968-69 series. Will Stokes’ men follow suit?

Do not hold your breath. India’s capacity to bend cricket to their will is such that Stokes, who must privately be harbouring molten rage, can say only that he is “frustrated”. The calculation is that there is too much political capital at stake to rock the boat. Except this particular controversy goes beyond politics. The snub to Bashir is, quite simply, a move with race at its heart. And this is one outrage that England cannot let stand.

IPL 2024 Auction: BCCI sets 30 November as deadline for players to register for event https://indiamirror.net/index.php/en/terms-and-conditions/item/3795-ipl-2024-auction-bcci-sets-30-november-as-deadline-for-players-to-register-for-event https://indiamirror.net/index.php/en/terms-and-conditions/item/3795-ipl-2024-auction-bcci-sets-30-november-as-deadline-for-players-to-register-for-event

The Indian Premier League (IPL) Governing Council has reportedly set 30 November as the final day for players to register for the auction that takes place next month.

The development comes three days after the deadline for franchises to finalise their list of retained and released players. Players will have to submit their names along with No-Objection Certificates from their respective boards and according to a report on Cricbuzz, have until Thursday to complete the process.

The IPL auction is set to take place in Dubai on 19 December, with the trading window set to remain active till the 12th. Given it will be taking place right after the ICC World Cup, the top performers from the mega event will heavily sought after by the ten franchises including Pat Cummins, who led Australia to their sixth world title with a six-wicket victory over India.

The IPL Retention Day on Sunday witnessed some interesting calls made by the franchise, with Chennai Super Kings releasing all-rounder Ben Stokes although the England Test captain had already indicated his intention to pull out of the 2024 season. Additionally, Kolkata Knight Riders released India all-rounder Shardul Thakur while Mumbai Indians parted ways with express quick Jofra Archer.

Five-time champions MI also dominated headlines for welcoming Gujarat Titans captain Hardik Pandya back into their fold through an all-cash trade. Pandya led the Titans for two seasons, helping them win the title on IPL debut in 2022, and and returns to the franchise that he had represented for seven seasons since his debut in 2015.

There are a total of 77 slots available across the 10 teams following the retentions and releases with a maximum of 30 overseas players. More than 700 players are expected to sign up for the auction although not everyone will make it to the shortlist that the BCCI prepares ahead of the auction. The shortlist had 405 players ahead of the last year’s auction that took place in Kochi.

IPL Auctions 2024: Rajasthan Royals retained players, current squad, purse amount, remaining slots https://indiamirror.net/index.php/en/terms-and-conditions/item/3794-ipl-auctions-2024-rajasthan-royals-retained-players-current-squad-purse-amount-remaining-slots https://indiamirror.net/index.php/en/terms-and-conditions/item/3794-ipl-auctions-2024-rajasthan-royals-retained-players-current-squad-purse-amount-remaining-slots

The Rajasthan Royals, who had won the inaugural edition in 2008 and finished runners-up 14 years later, have largely retained their core heading into the player auction that will take place in Dubai on 19 December.

That includes the likes of Yashasvi Jaiswal, Yuzvendra Chahal, Ravichandran Ashwin, Prasidh Krishna, Jos Buttler, Trent Boult among others besides skipper Sanju Samson himself.

Senior England batter Joe Root had indicated his decision to pull out of the 2024 season after having remained on the bench throughout the 2023 season, and he was among the nine players released by the Royals on Sunday. It remains to be seen whether the Royals pursue him in next month’s auction or not.

Also getting released from the franchise is senior West Indian all-rounder Jason Holder, who had little impact with bat or ball for the Royals last season, collecting 12 runs in eight appearances across the season along with four wickets. The Barbadian had three good seasons with the ball between 2020 and 2022 for Sunrisers Hyderabad and Lucknow Super Giants, but simply could not deliver for the Royals this time around.

Pacer Obed McCoy, who played just one game in the entire 2023 season, too follows fellow West Indian Holder in the auction pool. The other players released by the Royals are Murugan Ashwin. KC Cariappa, KM Asif, Akash Vashisht, Abdul Basith and Kuldip Yadav (the pacer).

RR have also been part of the trading window, sending batter Devdutt Padikkal to Lucknow Super Giants in exchange of pacer Avesh Khan. Avesh’s inclusion shores up the Indian pace-bowling department that comprises Krishna, Navdeep Saini and Kuldeep Sen and he might just be given a long rope this season as one of RR’s first-choice seam options.

Rajasthan Royals retained players: Sanju Samson, Ravichandran Ashwin, Yuzvendra Chahal, Prasidh Krishna, Navdeep Saini, Avesh Khan (Traded from LSG), Yashasvi Jaiswal, Kuldeep Sen, Sandeep Sharma, Riyan Parag, Dhruv Jurel, Kunal Singh Rathore, Jos Buttler, Trent Boult, Adam Zampa, Shimron Hetmyer, Donovan Ferreira.

Rajasthan Royals released players: Murugan Ashwin. KC Cariappa, KM Asif, Akash Vashisht, Abdul Basith, Kuldip Yadav, Joe Root, Jason Holder, Obed McCoy.

Rajasthan Royals remaining slots: RR have 17 players in the squad which includes five overseas players. It means they have space for eight more players including three overseas.

Rajasthan Royals purse remaining: RR have spent Rs. 85.5 crore on their current squad. They have Rs 14.5 crore still to spend.
