Patil, an MP from Hingoli Lok Sabha constituency, wrote his resignation letter at the protest site in Umarkhed in Yavatmal and said that he will hand it over to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on Monday. “The issue of Maratha reservation has been pending for years.
The CM had given assurance that reservation will be given... I held a meeting regarding this in Delhi recently. I will meet Lok Sabha Speaker and hand over my resignation on Monday to draw their attention to the issue,” he said. The community has been demanding quota in education and government jobs.
Patil was recently in news for allegedly forcing Dr Shyamrao Wakode, the acting dean of the Dr Shankarrao Chavan Government Medical College and Hospital, to clean a toilet in the hospital where 24 people, including 12 infants, died within 24 hours between September 30 and October 1.
Patil took the decision while visiting Umarkhed taluka where some protesters met Patil and stopped him from entering the villages and raised the demand to raise the Maratha reservation issue in the Parliament.
According to a Shiv Sena functionary who was with the MP, “Patil was trying to convince the Maratha community members, saying he himself was in support of their cause, when the protesters got aggressive and asked him to resign if he really meant it. Patil then told the protesters that if his resignation can get reservation for the Marathas, he would do so. Patil then wrote his resignation letter and showed it to the protesters.”
