Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Monday met Kalpana Soren, wife of former Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren at her residence in Ranchi.

The visit came shortly after the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM)-Congress-RJD and CPI (M) alliance won a crucial floor test in the Jharkhand assembly. After meeting Kalpana, Gandhi held a public rally at Shaheed Maidan in the HEC Complex in Ranchi.

Congress general secretary in-charge communications Jairam Ramesh shared a picture of Rahul Gandhi standing next to Kalpana Soren in Ranchi.

Hemant Soren's resignation from the post of Jharkhand Chief Minister came not so long before he was arrested in a money-laundering case by the Enforcement Directorate. Kalpana Soren was expected to be announced as the next Chief Minister of Jharkhand.

However, the JMM on January 31, threw a surprise by announcing Champai Soren, MLA from Seraikella assembly constituency, as the new Chief Minister-face.

Champai Soren had all the support from the MLAs, and he had asserted the confidence of winning the trust vote on February 5.

Before the trust vote in the assembly, Hemant Soren who was also present in the house, challenged the opposition to prove the charges of land fraud against him, saying that he would quit politics, if found guilty.

The former Chief Minister also alleged that 'Raj Bhavan' was involved and was instrumental in his arrest after a "conspiracy" was hatched by the Centre.

Later, the JMM and its alliance comprehensively won the floor test by 47 votes in its favour against the BJP and its allies, which got only 29 votes.

Soren was on Friday remanded to five days' ED custody by a special PMLA court in Ranchi in connection with a money laundering case linked to an alleged land fraud.
