KAFD Metro Station: A crucial hub

Zaha Hadid Architects’ KAFD Metro Station is more than just a transit point; it’s a pivotal interchange in the network. The station connects rail lines with bus routes and park-and-ride services, enhancing overall accessibility. Located in the King Abdullah Financial District, it links directly to King Khalid International Airport and the district’s monorail skybridge.

Innovative public spaces

ZHA’s design includes both indoor and outdoor plazas, creating vibrant communal areas. These spaces serve as more than transit hubs, fostering social interactions and enriching the urban environment.

Connectivity at its core

The KAFD Metro Station’s design is rooted in connectivity. Using predictive modeling, ZHA optimized the layout to accommodate rail, pedestrian, and car traffic, ensuring smooth movement and reducing congestion. The station’s three-dimensional lattice structure, inspired by intersecting sinewaves, organizes circulation while shaping its architectural identity.

Sustainability in design

The station’s exterior, clad in ultra-high-performance concrete panels with geometric perforations, is both a design statement and a functional element. Inspired by the desert’s natural patterns, the facade minimizes solar heat gain, combining aesthetic appeal with environmental efficiency.

Green architecture and LEED certification

Sustainability is integral to the station’s design. A high-efficiency cooling system adjusts to passenger levels, and sliding platform doors retain cool air. These innovations, powered by renewable energy, earned the station LEED Gold certification, reflecting its environmental commitment.

Blending form and function

ZHA’s approach seamlessly integrates the station’s external envelope with its internal structure. This design enhances structural efficiency, simplifies construction, and supports both platforms and viaducts. The result is a station that is as practical as it is visually striking.
