A police officer has also been shifted to the police lines for dereliction of duty after a student was molested by three men who also took off her clothes and recorded a video of her. The incident took place late Wednesday.
Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Bhelupur, Praveen Kumar Singh stated that Station House Officer (SHO) of Lanka police station Ashwini Pandey has been sent to the lines for dereliction of duty.
No arrests were reported in the case till Friday afternoon.
“A meeting was held with the Banaras Hindu University officials and it was decided to deploy constables at certain places across the campus to stop entry of outsiders and prevent recurrence of any untoward incident. Besides in the four main gates of the university, constables will also be deployed at some other spots across the campus, ACP Singh was quoted by PTI as saying.
Additional police forces have also been deployed at several places inside the university.
Police have also formed several teams to identify and arrest the accused. Police teams are looking through CCTV footage of cameras inside the campus and nearby areas, and are also using mobile surveillance to track the attackers.
Students staged a massive protest demanding better security arrangements on campus. The agitators also alleged that girls are not safe on the campus as there are no security personnel in most of the areas of the institute. The CCTVs installed in residences and campus are also out of order, they claimed.
The protest near IIT-BHU’s Rajputana Hostel was called off late Thursday night.
