India Sees Record 95,735 New COVID-19 Infections, 1,172 Fatalities in 24 Hours Featured

one of only two countries among the 10 nations with the most COVID-19 cases to see a continuous increase in its daily death toll.New Delhi: The country saw a record single-day spike of 95,735 infections and 1,172 fatalities taking India’s COVID-19 caseload past 44 lakh and death toll to 75,062. The recoveries surged to 34,71,783 on Thursday, according to the Union health ministry.The total cases mounted to 44,65,863, the ministry data updated at 8 am showed.Among countries with the most infections, India and Argentina are the only two whose daily infection count continues to grow.

The COVID-19 fatality rate has dropped to 1.68 per cent while the recovery rate was recorded at 77.74 per cent.

There are 9,19,018 active cases in the country which comprise 20.58 per cent of the total caseload, the data stated.However, India is one of only two countries among the 10 nations with the most COVID-19 cases to see a continuous increase in its daily death toll. The other country is Argentina which, 512,000 cases, is at No. 10. India is at No. 2.

India’s COVID-19 tally crossed the 20 lakh mark on August 7, it went past 30 lakh on August 23 and 40 lakh on September 5.

According to ICMR, a total of 5,29,34,433 samples have been tested up to September 9 with 11,29,756 samples being tested on Wednesday.

Global numbers

Across the world, there have now been over 27.5 million confirmed cases of COVID-19. In total, 27,766,325 confirmed cases have been reported as of Thursday morning.

According to Johns Hopkins University, the global death toll due to COVID-19 stands at 902,468. Another 18,703,758 people have recovered from the disease.

In many countries, official data includes only deaths reported in hospitals, not those in homes or nursing homes.

The US has recorded 6,359,720 confirmed cases of COVID-19, the respiratory illness caused by the novel coronavirus. India is in second place with 4,370,128, followed by Brazil (4,197,889), Russia (1,037,526) and Peru (696,190). 

The US has also recorded the highest death toll, with 190,815 fatalities so far. The death toll has also been high in Brazil (128,539), India (73,890), Mexico (69,049), the UK (41,683), Italy (35,577), France (30,805), and Peru (30,123).
