Congress to hand over memorandum against farm laws with 2 crore signatures to President Featured

  22 December 2020

Former Congress president Rahul Gandhi will lead a delegation of Congress leaders to meet the President, and he will urge the intervention of President for annulling the three ‘black’ laws.

The campaign by the Congress to collect 2 crore signatures from all over the country against the three contentious farm laws will culminate on Thursday with a party delegation set to hand over a memorandum enclosing the signatures to President Ram Nath Kovind.

A statement issued by AICC general secretary KV Venugopal said that former Congress president Rahul Gandhi will lead a delegation of Congress leaders to meet the President, and he will urge the intervention of President for annulling the three ‘black’ laws.“It has become absolutely clear that the Modi Govt is only committed to the welfare of large corporates instead of innocent farmers and farm labour,” said Venugopal.

Alleging that the Modi government was trying to drum up false propaganda in favour of the farm laws using public money, Venugopal said, “The Congress party had launched a nationwide campaign for collecting memoranda of appeals addressed to the Hon’ble President of India signed by farmers, farm labourers and other stakeholders opposing these legislations right from the initial stage of introduction of these Bills in the Parliament. Around 2 crore signatures, urging the intervention of Hon’ble Rashtrapati ji for withdrawal of the three legislations, have been collected till now.”

Rahul Gandhi had earlier met the President in the first week of December leading a delegation of opposition leaders and urged him to repeal the farm laws. “We met the President and informed him of our view regarding the three farm laws. We have asked for their repeal. We informed the President that it is critical that they are taken back,” Rahul had told reporters after meeting the President.
