  08 January 2025

Actor Kangana Ranaut recently extended a personal invitation to Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra to watch her upcoming film Emergency. In the film, Kangana portrays Priyanka’s grandmother, the iconic former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.

The invitation was reportedly made during an interaction between the two MPs in Parliament, sparking interest in the film’s portrayal of the historical figure and the era she shaped. With Emergency being one of Kangana’s most ambitious projects, this gesture has added another layer of anticipation to its release.

"I actually met Priyanka Gandhi ji in Parliament, and the first thing I told her was, ‘Aapko Emergency dekhni chahiye (You should watch Emergency),’” Kangana recounted. "She was very gracious and responded, ‘Yeah, maybe.’ I said, ‘You will quite like it.’"

The actor highlighted the care and depth she infused into her portrayal of Indira Gandhi, focusing on the critical period when her government declared Emergency in India.

"I believe it’s a very sensitive and sensible portrayal of one episode and one personality. I’ve taken great care to portray Mrs. Gandhi with dignity," Kangana added.Talking about the research process for the film, Kangana stated, "During my research, I noticed a lot of focus on her personal life—her relationship with her husband, friends, and controversial equations. I thought to myself, there is so much more to a person. I have taken special care, not even going into those directions, because when it comes to women, they are always reduced to their equation with men around them, and sensational encounters."

Set against the backdrop of one of India’s most turbulent political eras, Emergency delves into the 1975 Emergency imposed by Indira Gandhi. Directed by and starring Kangana Ranaut, the film also boasts powerful performances from Anupam Kher and Shreyas Talpade in pivotal roles.

Emergency is set to hit theaters on January 17.
