Why Sunny Leone is trending on Twitter on India’s Independence Day Featured

  15 August 2020

New Delhi: The 74th Independence day celebrations Saturday were marked by an almost 90-minute-long speech by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at Red Fort,

in which several important announcements were made as well as crucial issues addressed — from Covid vaccine trials to the India-China stand-off.However, by mid morning, much of Twitterati seemed to be talking about something entirely different — actor Sunny Leone. The reason? P. Naveen Kumar, the man whose Facebook post is believed to have triggered riots in Bengaluru this week, seems to be a Leone fan.

An article by India Today, titled A Sunny Leone fan, a political aspirant: Know more about man allegedly behind post that burnt Bengaluru, scrutinised Kumar’s past Facebook posts and talked about his Leone fandom.

The story triggered a variety of reactions on Twitter — from many praising Leone to others trying to defend Kumar from the ‘character assassination’. As it began trending, several Twitter users, unaware of what caused the multiple mentions of Leone, wondered why her name became a trending subject on Independence Day.
